As one concert series draws to a close, another is hitting its prime. Denison, Texas, is down to its final three Music on Main concerts, but the talent is certainly not slowing down. When I first heard that Booker T. Jones was coming to town, I had to pause—the name was familiar, and then it hit me: he is the legendary Booker T. from Booker T. & the M.G.'s. I knew immediately I had to be there.
With a career spanning collaborations with icons like Otis Redding and production work for Willie Nelson, Booker T.’s impact on the music world runs deep. In 2007, he received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award—one of the highest honors in the industry. Yet, far removed from the accolades, there he was in Denison, playing his heart out at 81 years young for a crowd at a free concert in Heritage Park.
For nearly two hours, Booker T. and his fantastic band performed original tracks alongside timeless covers by B.B. King, Marvin Gaye, and George Gershwin. He showcased his band’s incredible musicianship by giving every member a moment to solo. To understand just how special this performance was, you only had to look at the faces of the Overdrive Entertainment crew. The smiles on their faces throughout the night proved that we were witnessing a master entertainer doing exactly what he does best.
