’Tis the season—Oktoberfest season, that is!
This time of year, it’s hard not to find an Oktoberfest happening somewhere around North Texas. One of the biggest takes place every year in McKinney, Texas, and this year we made our way downtown to check it out!
Spanning a good portion of Historic Downtown McKinney, we found just about everything German—and quite a bit that wasn’t! Of course, mass quantities of German-style bier were consumed, along with pretzels, brats, and plenty of other German fare.
But as good as the food and bier were, you can’t live on beer alone. You’ve gotta have some entertainment too!
This year's fest included, Wiener dog races, a beard and mustache competition, a stein-holding contest, polka music, and, of course, plenty of good old-fashioned people watching. For the youngsters, there was a midway with carnival rides and games to keep them entertained.
The City of McKinney also provided a shuttle service from a local church, giving visitors a convenient ride into the downtown area.
If you decide to make the trip next year, just keep in mind that much of the downtown area is closed to traffic and parking can be limited. The good news is that the downtown shops and restaurants were open for business, giving folks plenty of other options for food, drinks, and a little shopping while they were there.
And, of course, you can never forget that McKinney makes a great day-date destination year-round. We always seem to find something interesting when we're exploring this ever-expanding city!
